Pablo Escobar's brother 'suing Apple for $2.6bn over iPhone hack'

The brother of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar is reportedly suing Apple for billions of dollars after claiming someone got his address when they hacked into his iPhone.

US entertainment site TMZ says legal documents show Roberto Escobar is suing the tech giant for $2.6bn (£2.1bn).

He is said to have brought the case after claiming someone hacked into an iPhoneX and sent him a "life-threatening letter" after apparently finding his address through FaceTime.

Escobar is reportedly claiming that an Apple employee assured him the phone was the most secure phone on the market.

He is said to be sensitive to ensuring high security due to previous assassination attempts.

TMZ says Escobar's legal papers state that the security breach has forced him go into hiding - and that he is now seeking damages for breach of contract, misrepresentation and emotional distress.

It is not the first time the older Escobar brother - once head accountant for his brother's Medellin cartel - has been in the headlines with links to smartphones .

Earlier this year he released a foldable gold smartphone that he claimed was unbreakable and similar to Samsung's Galaxy Fold and Huawei's Mate X.

In an interview with Digital Trends, he also said had hopes of "beating Apple" and revealed his lawyers were building a "$30bn class-action lawsuit" against the company for "cheating the people and selling worthless phones".

Sky News has contacted Apple for comment.
