When released in 2013, Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim was somewhat a disappointment in the United States, becoming one of those rare films to gross $400 million worldwide while barely taking over $100 million in North America.

As a result, the sequel was delayed numerous times, with Del Toro dropping out as director. Eventually, the ball began rolling again, though, with Daredevil writer Steven S. DeKnight set to make his directorial debut with the newly titled Pacific Rim: Uprising.

While Idris Elba and Charlie will not be returning, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day will be while. Additional cast members include Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian and John Boyega, who act as the film’s lead.

Thanks to The Force Awakens actor, we have our first look at Boyega’s character, Jake Pentecost, who broods in a typically gritty photograph posted to Twitter.

Little is currently known about the film’s plot: perhaps the kaiju will return once more? Or perhaps the world will struggle with the Jaeger technology now the monsters are gone?

Whatever the case, it is over a year until Pacific Rim: Uprising reaches cinemas, the current release date being 23 February 2018.
