Pacos de Ferreira 1-0 Tottenham LIVE! Europa Conference League match stream as Spurs lose in Portugal

Pacos de Ferreira vs Tottenham LIVE!

Tottenham have it all to do to earn a place in the inaugural Europa Conference League after losing 1-0 to FC Pacos de Ferreira in the first lef of their play-off tie.

Spurs missed out on Champions League and Europa League football last season after finishing seventh in the table, but Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are still in continental action in Uefa’s new club tournament.

It may not be the competition that Spurs - or Harry Kane - wanted to be in, but it does offer a real chance of silverware for Nuno’s first season in charge.

None of the 32 teams who will compete in the Conference League group stage were granted automatic qualification, and Spurs must first see off Portuguese outfit Pacos - who finished fifth in the Primeira Liga last season - over two legs if they are to make it to the group stage proper.

Nuno has handed starts to summer signings Cristian Romero, Bryan Gil and Pierluigi Gollini, while highly-rated young forward Dane Scarlett leads the attack - but Spurs went into half-time 1-0 down, and were unable to find a route back into the game.

That means it could be a tricky second leg in north London, with Nuno likely to restore a few key players to his squad for that must-win game.

Pacos de Ferreira 1-0 Tottenham: Spurs lose in Portugal to leave Europa Conference League spot in the balance

That’s all, folks

So, 64% possession but no shots on target tells you the story for Spurs.

They dominated the ball but failed to create anything with it, which isn’t a huge surprise given the XI Nuno put out.

There’s work to do in north London for the second leg - and we’ll bring you live coverage of that game next Thursday.

Bye for now.

Billed as the signing to fix Spurs’ defence, but on this evidence patience is required. Caught square for the Pacos goal and did not look wholly convincing. In his defence, he is still working his way to full fitness and does not speak the language yet.

A disappointing defeat in Portugal but hardly a disaster given the line-up and the second leg at home Thursday.

More worrying than the result was that none of the senior players really stepped up and took their chance.

Full-time! Pacos 1-0 Tottenham

It’s all over in Portugal, and Spurs lose the first leg of their Europa Conference League play-off tie.

Not. Very. Good.

21:22 , Tom Doyle

Gil and Romero combine to block a counter, and it’s Gil who picks up the yellow card.

Second left now, surely...

21:20 , Tom Doyle

89 mins: A late change for Spurs as Paskotsi replaces Carter-Vickers.

21:17 , Tom Doyle

Not long left now to find that valuable away goal...

21:15 , Tom Doyle

85 mins: Pacos have a chance to go 2-0, but Scarlett blocks a free-kick in a dangerous position.

21:09 , Tom Doyle

Another change for Spurs as Bennett replaces Sessegnon.

21:08 , Tom Doyle

We’ve got about 10 minutes left here, and though Pacos would have expected a weakened Spurs side tonight, this has been relatively easy going for them.

20:58 , Tom Doyle

It’s getting to the now-or-never stage...

20:54 , Tom Doyle

65 mins: Time slips away, and Spurs still have yet to have a shot on target. This is starting to become a worry for Nuno.

Dan Kilpatrick | Chief football correspondent

20:47 , Tom Doyle

There’s been little in the way of improvement for Spurs at the start of this second half, although Sessegnon is trying to raise the tempo from wing-back.

Nuno has already used his most experienced sub in Jack Clarke.

20:45 , Tom Doyle

55 mins: Spurs are dominating possession with 64% of the ball so far, but have had just two shots - and neither were on target. That will have to change in the next 35 minutes or so.

20:44 , Tom Doyle

Whille a win is not necessarily key for Spurs given they’d expect to win the home leg with a few star players back if needed, an away goal would go a long way to getting them through.

If they head back to north London without a goal, Pacos will set up extremely defensively and could make things really difficult in the second leg.

Kick-off!

We are back underway in Portugal, and there’s been a change for Spurs - Nile John is off, and Jack Clarke is on.

HT, 1-0. Spurs haven’t created a chance since the second minute and can’t have too many complaints about going in behind. It was always going to be tough with such an inexperienced side but Nuno will nonetheless want to see more urgency from his players after the break.

Half-time | Pacos 1-0 Spurs

20:18 , Tom Doyle

Well well well...

GOAL! Pacos 1-0 Spurs | Silva, 43 mins

20:16 , Tom Doyle

Oh dear. Spurs are behind in Portugal, and it’s Silva who beats the offside trap before beating Gollini.

Winks won’t want to see that back, as he sloppily conceded possession.

20:14 , Tom Doyle

Frustration for Spurs here as Gil seems to be onside in a decent position, but is flagged off. Not sure he’ll be happy with that call.

20:13 , Tom Doyle

40 mins: It goes without saying that a first XI with 11 changes was always going to be disjointed, and so it’s proved for Spurs so far in Portugal.

Dan Kilpatrick | Chief football correspondent

Pacos have realised they’re not playing Tottenham’s first team and have worked their way into the game.

The hosts are now looking the more threatening in the final third, although it’s still a bit tentative from both sides.

Bryan Gil looks at home on the ball and is enjoying plenty of it in the early stages.

The debutant looks sharp and has already skinned his full-back to create the first opening of the night for Sessegnon.

So, Spurs boss Nuno has indeed handed a full debut to 17-year-old Dane Scarlett.

Big chance for Dane Scarlett

In arry Kane's absence, and with Heung-min Son also not going to start in Portugal, 17-year-old Dane Scarlett will make his first senior start for Spurs.

Big things are expected of the teenager, who has been tipped for the top by former boss Jose Mourinho.

"He's going to start the game tomorrow. We have big, big expectations regarding Dane because he did so well in pre-season which you recall the game against Leyton Orient in which he scored and he was involved in many of the games in pre-season," Nuno added.

"He's a young talent that we want to develop and we want to make him better and want to make him grow because there's a lot of potential there."

Nuno plays down Kane talk

So, what next for Harry Kane? Spurs boss Nuno insists he is not listening to the gossip.

"Maybe I'm the only one who doesn't really care about what's been said and written outside, because this you cannot control, and honestly with all my respect it doesn't really matter," Nuno, who revealed he had breakfast with Kane on Thursday, said.

"What matters is what is happening behind the doors, and what is happening behind the doors is that Harry is our player, he's preparing himself, training today, he's going to train tomorrow and again on Friday, joining the group, and this is how we operate.

"We don't really pay much attention to what's said outside regarding the situation of Harry, Harry is our player, one of the best players in the world, and we are very lucky to have him.

"What we must be sure of is that when we decide to put a player on the pitch we have to consider all of the aspects, the fitness, the mental aspects and we are here to support all of the players equally. Harry has all of our support."

Pacos vs Tottenham prediction

There is a sense of optimism around Spurs following Sunday’s 1-0 Premier League win over champions Manchester City, so a game against Pacos that could previously have been greeted with a cynical edge now takes on a different air - especially with plenty of squad players looking to impress Nuno.

Early Spurs team news

Harry Kane did not travel with a youthful Spurs squad to Portugal on Wednesday morning, further delaying his return to action amid the England captain’s ongoing frustrations with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

Kane is still building up his fitness after coming out of quarantine on Thursday last week and Nuno is set to ring the changes for the match, with the squad thought to include teenagers Alfie Devine and Dane Scarlett.

Ryan Sessegnon is lacking match fitness, while Tanguy Ndombele’s future remains up in the air after not being used in pre-season despite no injury concerns.
