A holidaymaker who had been enjoying a day out paddleboarding along a route to Torridge came across the shocking discovery of a dead man, an inquest has heard. The body was later identified as being 28-year-old Charlie Scrine who lived in Bideford.

An inquest recently opened into his death at Exeter Coroner's Court. The short hearing heard Mr Scrine, who was born in Barnstaple, was located in a remote location beside the waterway on June 11.

Alison Longhorn, area coroner for Exeter and Greater Devon, said: "A holidaymaker was paddleboarding along a route to Torridge when they sighted a male hanging from a tree. Police attended the remote location.

"The precise cause of death is not yet ascertained." The inquest was adjourned and will be listed at a later date for a full inquest to be heard.
