Paddy ‘the Baddy’ Pimblett has opened up about why he had to end his “terrible” habit. The 29-year-old from Huyton is in training for his next fight after his victory in UFC 304 back in July.

Outside of the ring, regular updates are posted to his 3.3m followers on Instagram. His YouTube channel is active too, including videos of his life as a fighter and his Chattin’ Pony podcast. In the latest episode, Paddy spoke to professional boxer Sunny Edwards. Sunny is preparing for his world flyweight title fight against Galal Yafai later this month.

Sunny spoke about his relationship with social media. During one period in the lead-up to a fight against Ryan Farrag in October 2018, Sunny admitted he and his opponent “went back and forth every day” arguing online for about six or seven weeks. Laughing, he added: “I was finishing training, looking at my phone and putting videos together.”

Paddy related to this and said: “I was active on social media then. That was when I ran my own Instagram. I can't run it anymore. I'd just be in the comment sections every day, just giving people s*** and getting s*** back. I was terrible for it, that's why I had to just take a step back from that Instagram lad.”

Sunny said: “Even though you’re buzzing off it, sometimes you're sitting there and think, I've been sat here just arguing with d***heads for two hours.” Paddy replied: “I'm still terrible for that. I don’t have notifications on, because if I did, I wouldn't be off the phone. It's a killer. I’d just be sitting there arguing with people.”

Paddy added that he and his wife Laura Gregory have less time to keep up with social media after they welcomed twin baby girls in April, called Betsy and Margot Pimblett. The UFC fighter said Laura has hundreds of unread WhatsApp messages on her phone.

He said: “Obviously because of the twins now, she has hardly got any time to message anyone back. She just messages about three people - me, her mate and her mum. She doesn't have time to (message anyone else).

“On my WhatsApp, every day, I try to get back to all my messages. But obviously, people must think I'm ignorant on Instagram. They probably think, ‘oh, he doesn't even message people back, blah, blah.’ But, as I say, I don't run it.

“With the social media stuff nowadays of any fighter, like yourself who’s a world champion, you can't even do it on your own. It's hard work.”
