Pair of Dolphins Swim Near Venice's Iconic St Mark's Square

A pair of dolphins were spotted swimming near Venice’s Grand Canal on March 22, close to the iconic St Mark’s Square. The video shows the two dolphins swimming next to one another in the canal as nearby boaters look on.

Luca Folin told Storyful he shot the footage while at work that morning. “It was really a nice surprise, something unique and special to see them so close to the Grand Canal,” said Folin.

He said his boss informed the fire brigade and harbormaster about the presence of the dolphins, fearing that the flow of nearby boats could be harmful to them.

Local reports noted the aquatic mammals were likely able to make their way up the Grand Canal due to COVID-19 restrictions limiting tourism. Credit: Luca Folin via Storyful
