Paisley musician Joe Egan dies as tributes pour in for Stuck in the Middle with You songwriter

Paisley-born singer-songwriter Joe Egan has died aged 77 with tributes flooding in for the Stuck in the Middle with You songwriter.

The Stealers Wheel co-founder -who was known for his stint in the popular Scottish folk band alongside the late Gerry Rafferty and other members - passed away on Saturday.

Joe Egan was a vocalist in the group before they went their separate ways in 1975, and also played several instruments. He co-wrote the hit song Stuck in the Middle with You with Rafferty, which rose to number 8 on the Official Singles Chart in the UK and number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US.

Joe's passing was confirmed in a Facebook post on the official page for his late bandmate Gerry, which is believed to be run by a family member of the latter.

It read: "Very sad news that the other half of Stealers Wheel, Joe Egan, passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon with his nearest and dearest around him. I will always remember him as a sweet and gentle soul. May he rest in peace."

Tributes have poured in on social media from devastated fans of the singer.

One person wrote on X: "Very sad news." Another said: "RIP Joe Egan. Hell of a voice, hell of a songwriter."

A third person added: "His talent was immense and it shone beautifully, alas, all too briefly."

Another fan tweeted: "Just heard the sad news.." They added in their post: "May Joe rest in peace."

Someone else said: "RIP Joe and thank you for the music." Sharing their thoughts on the late musician, another fan wrote on the platform: "Loved his voice and his songwriting." They weren't alone in praising Joe for his songwriting.

Sharing their reaction to the news, another fan tweeted: "Rest in peace #JoeEgan. [...] He co-wrote so many great songs with #GerryRafferty including one of the finest records of all time - Stuck In The Middle With You."
