The Pale Horse cast has explained why the witches are not what fans might have expected to see.

BBC One's new two-part Agatha Christie adaptation kicked off on Sunday night (February 9) and features actors such as The Man in the High Castle's Rufus Sewell, Gotham's Sean Pertwee and Skins star Kaya Scodelario.

Actresses Sheila Atim, Kathy Kiera Clarke and Rita Tushingham, who play the witches on the show, have shared more details about their characters and explained how their witches are different to the ones normally portrayed in the entertainment industry.

"It turns out that we're not that witchy at all," Kathy, who plays Sybil Stamfordis, told Digital Spy and other media. "As Sarah [Phelps, writer] has written it, it's three very real, very grounded women who may or may not have gifts and practice the dark arts, or whatever this thing is."

"That's what's so exciting about it," Rita, who plays Bella, agreed. "It's so different. No Poirot. No Miss Marple."

Sheila Atim, who plays Thyrza Grey, added that she's excited about the whole supernatural prospect behind the storyline she's involved.

"I was excited by the prospect of the murder mystery that isn't necessarily rooted in reality, so to speak," she explained.

"I hadn't really seen that before and I always thought that those murder mysteries hinge on the fact that it's rooted in reality, so we must be able to find who did it.

"The fact that there is this added element of these people might have powers that they can tap into... I thought was really cool."

The Pale Horse concludes next Sunday (February 16) on BBC One.
