Pancho the Grenfell Tower cat being looked after at nearby church

A church is looking after a cat that was rescued from the devastating Grenfell Tower fire.

Pancho, who has been dubbed the Grenfell Tower cat, was taken in by volunteers after he became separated from his owners.

The nearby St Clement’s Church in Treagold are now looking after him while the search for his owners continues.

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home has offered its help for Pancho and any other pets who have found themselves without a home or a human.

Members of the public have also rushed to offer foster homes for pets.

Police have confirmed that 17 people have now died in the fire, that ripped through the tower block in Kensington, west London.

Many people are still unaccounted for and the emergency services have warned that the death toll is set to rise “significantly”.

No cause of the fire has yet been established, although one resident is said to have told neighbours it started after his fridge exploded.

Specialist urban search and rescue teams are being brought in to make the 24-storey tower block safe to allow firefighters and the police to carry out investigations.

Search dogs will also be used to help locate the missing in the wreckage.
