Aberdeen have suffered a huge blow after the club confirmed that striker Pape Habib Gueye will be out of action until the new year with a quad muscle tear injury.

The Senegalese forward has been rejuvenated under new Dons boss Jimmy Thelin, scoring six times in six starts so far this season to help them rack up an impressive 12-game winning spree in all competitions. However, the 25-year-year-old was missing from last Saturday's 2-1 away win against Dundee after suffering the injury in training, and the Reds have now revealed that he will miss up to 14 weeks of action, ruling him out of huge Premiership clashes with Celtic and Rangers next month and a Premier Sports Cup showdown with the former at the start of November.

Reds boss Jimmy Thelin said: “It’s a big blow for Pape given how well he has started the season but he is an optimistic guy and he will have our excellent medical team to guide him through the next few months. We trust the squad we have in place, we believe in the players, and we will work to find solutions to ensure we remain effective in that area of the pitch.

“Everyone at Cormack Park will support Pape to get him back to fitness as soon as possible and we wish him well with his recovery.”

Gueye has lit up the Granite City with his displays in the early part of the season, but Aberdeen are at least well stocked in the forward department. Millwall loanee Kevin Nisbet has hit the ground running since arriving in the summer while Thelin also has fellow new recruit Peter Ambrose and Slovenian striker Ester Sokler at his disposal.
