Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No - it's a crime-fighting parachute dog

One elite air force unit has found a secret weapon when it comes to fighting terrorism - a parachuting dog.

Belgian Shepherd Jany is the team's newest recruit and jumps out of the aircraft at more than 1,000ft  - just like the rest of the officers.

The dog - who is used to detect explosives with the Colombian Group of Air Special Commands - makes dozens of jumps with the men.

Jany normally jumps while she is strapped safely to Officer Jorge Herrara, who is one of the 90 men in the terrorist and criminal fighting force based at the Madrid Air Base, just outside the Colombian capital of Bogota.

The high-flying pooch has been pictured with her crime-fighting pals in a series of snaps taken by Oliver Ehmig, from Colombia.

Oliver said: "Minutes before the jump, I noticed the fraternal friendship between the members of the Group of Air Special Commands.

"They were joking and pulling pranks on each other and Jany seemed calm, fully aware that she's going to jump out.

Belgian Shepherds are closely related to the more commonly known German Shepherd and are often used by armies and police forces to sniff out explosives and drugs.
