A mum and dad who believed their baby had died in 2011 were shocked to discover it was still alive – after they were sent an orphanage bill.

The unidentified parents, from Volgograd, Russia, had been told that their newborn would not live more than a week after it was born seven years ago.

The couple initially signed a waiver that left the baby in hospital care but they soon changed their mind.

However, when they returned to the hospital to collect their child, they were told that it had died.

Now, seven years later, the couple have discovered that their baby did not die after they were handed a £3,000 bill for the care of their child at an orphanage.

An administrative error saw bailiffs sent to the parents’ house to collect the money, and the mother’s bank account was seized.

When querying why she couldn’t access her account, the mother was shown orphanage documents by officials at the Volgograd Administration of the Federal Bailiff Service.

A spokesperson for the bailiff service said: ‘It became clear that the married couple had been assured for all this time that the child was dead.

‘The parents, so unexpectedly aware of the ‘resurrection’ of their baby, immediately appealed to the court for the restoration of parental rights.’

The child has now been reunited with its parents but it is not clear whether the stunned parents will pursue legal proceedings against the hospital.
