A school in Devon has warned parents of a giant rave which is rumoured to be planned as schools break up for half term. A large number of teenagers and young people are thought to be planning to attend a large gathering in Totnes on the evening of Friday, May 24.

Devon and Cornwall Police have informed local schools in South Devon that pupils may be planning a large rave in Totnes, with the code name 'M' being used to conceal it. Police also believe there are suggestions another rave will take place in Teignmouth, with the code name 'Motive'.

One parent has said the news of the rave is "concerning" as pupils prepare to sit exams. The parent, who does not wish to be named, said they understand students want to "blow off steam" but a large event could be dangerous due to the potential presence of drink and drugs.

They said: “I’ve heard from other schools that senior managers have been given the same information, so police are clearly taking this very seriously. It’s is concerning, but officers and teachers are all over it so it appears that whatever has been planned won’t happen, or will very quickly be dispersed.

"Students are in the middle of their exams so it is understandable that at the start of half term they would want to blow off some steam, but an event like this could be very dangerous, so I’m glad it had been disrupted before it even begins.

"Anyone willing to arrange an event like this would have no qualms endangering children with drink and drugs, hopefully everyone realises this is not just harmless fun.”

A letter which has been sent to parents by King Edward VI Community College warns that teenagers across South Devon, Plymouth and possibly Bristol will be travelling to Totnes for a rave. The letter which was sent out this evening said: "As you know, all of us in schools take our safeguarding duties very seriously, and we work closely with our partner agencies to do so.

"We have had notification from Devon and Cornwall police as follows: Police have received information suggesting there could be a mass gathering in Totnes on Friday evening.

"The code name being used for this is ‘M’. It is suggested this gathering is being arranged via Snapchat, with young people coming from across South Devon, Plymouth and possibly Bristol. There are serious safety concerns associated with this potential gathering.

"There is also information suggesting a large gathering taking place in Teignmouth, with the code name ‘Motive’. In common with other schools in our area, we are making parents and carers aware of this intelligence.

"We want all of our young people to be safe, and we want to make sure that as parents and carers you are also aware of the concerns around these potential events. If we receive further information or guidance from the Police we will of course update you."
