Partial Solar Eclipse Seen Over UK

A partial solar eclipse was visible in the UK and Ireland on the morning of June 10, as the moon passed before the sun and blocked as much as 40 percent of it from view.

The Royal Astronomical Society said the effect would be greatest in more northerly areas. Hannah Kenyon recorded this video in Bradford.

The effect was repeated for skywatchers across the northern hemisphere.

The phenomenon is also called an “annular eclipse,” NASA said, during which the moon “is far enough away from Earth that [it] appears smaller than the sun in the sky.”

Parts of Canada, Greenland and northern Russia could expect to see a “ring of fire” in the sky as the moon blocked the sun. Credit: Hannah Kenyon via Storyful
