Parts of Acapulco Bay Plunged Into Darkness as Powerful Earthquake Strikes

A powerful earthquake struck close to Acapulco, Mexico, on the evening of September 7, causing damage in the Pacific resort city, and leading to blackouts as far away as Mexico City.

The US Geological Survey and Mexico’s National Seismological Service reported the quake took place shortly before 8:48 local time. Several hours after the earthquake, the US agency had measured its magnitude at 7.0, which its Mexican counterpart placed the magnitude at 7.1.
