Passenger gets personal plane ride to New York - after rebooking mix-up gives him entire plane to himself

Chris O’Leary showed up for his rescheduled Delta flight home to New York from Cleveland, only to be told he was the only passenger

A stunned airline passenger had the kind of flight we all dream of - after a re-booking mix-up gave him an entire plane to himself.

Chris O’Leary showed up for his Delta flight home to New York from Cleveland, only to be told he was the only passenger.

He was originally scheduled to fly home at a 7.15am flight on January 13, but received a text alert saying it had been cancelled.

When he turned up several hours later at 1pm for his two-hour rescheduled flight, officials told him all the other passengers had been re-booked onto an earlier departure.

As the only other 7.15am passenger who was still yet to get back to New York, he was put on a separate Delta flight - as the only passenger on a 76-seat jet.

O’Leary, a media strategists, told Yahoo: ‘All I did was get on a plane I was booked to get on. I just happened to be at the right place at the right time.’

O’Leary later told CNN: ‘It was definitely the most memorable flight I've been on in recent memory if only for the sheer lack of passengers to become bothersome," he told ABC News. "There were no screaming babies, no one listening to loud lyrics or reclining their seats or taking off their shoes.

He added: ‘I get to the airport and one of the gate agents said, ‘We’ve been paging you all day. We had seat for you on an earlier flight,’’.

The gate agent said, ‘I’d better go down and tell the crew that they’re going to have one passenger.’ Sure enough I go down and board the plane and I’m the only one there.’

O’Leary said the attentive Delta staff appeared to enjoy having just a single passenger on board.

He said: ‘They were quite amused. During the safety demo, the flight attendant said, ‘I wouldn’t be able to say this, but if there’s an evacuation you can probably just follow us to the nearest exit.’’
