Passenger Snaps Huge Plume Of Volcanic Ash From Plane Window

This awe-inspiring photo was taken by a passenger on a plane flying over a volcanic eruption.

The plumes of dark ash are emanating from the remote Alsakan volcano Mount Pavlof.

The clouds of ash reached a reported 37,000 feet, prompting the Alaska Volcano Observatory to raise the threat warning for pilots flying nearby to red.

Appropriately named passenger Colt Snapp took the photo above from his seat on a passenger jet, on Sunday.

On Monday, strong winds pushed the ash cloud further afield which prompted airlines to ground several flights; but the threat level has since been downgraded.

Mount Pavlof is one of Alaska’s most active volcanoes, having erupted five times in the 80s and 90s before taking a break for ten years then going off in 2007, 2013, twice in 2014 and now in 2016.
