A car passenger was stabbed at a motorway junction after an argument with the driver of another car, police have said.

Paramedics were called to the southbound slip road at Junction 21 of the M5 at 10.10pm on Friday where they found a man with stab wounds, Avon and Somerset Police said.

The victim, 26, was a passenger in a car waiting at traffic lights to exit the motorway near Weston-super-Mare.

He got into a dispute with the driver of another car waiting at the lights, which ended in him being stabbed, the force added.

Police tracked down the vehicle and arrested a 42-year-old man from Birmingham on suspicion of wounding with intent. He is currently being questioned in custody.

The 26-year-old is still in hospital, but doctors say his injuries are not life-threatening.

"The victim was a passenger in a car which had just exited the M5 at this junction and was at a set of traffic lights. A dispute then ensued with the driver of another car, following which the victim was stabbed."
