Search for Survivors Continues After Boat Capsizes Near Puerto Rico

The US Coast Guard (USCG) said it was continuing to search for survivors on Friday evening, May 13, after a boat making an “illegal voyage” capsized off in the Mona Passage near Desecheo Island, Puerto Rico, on Thursday.

The bodies of 11 people had been recovered, the coast guard said, and 38 people were rescued.

Of those 38 survivors, 36 were from Haiti and two were from the Dominican Republic, the USCG said. Eight people were in hospital, it added.

The nationalities of the 11 dead victims had not been determined, and authorities did not know how many people were on the boat when it capsized, the coast guard said. Credit: US Coast Guard via Storyful
