News that Noel Fielding was one of Mel & Sue's replacements on The Great British Bake Off came as somewhat of a surprise. (Does he know about even bakes?)

But perhaps he's been picking up tips from Mel Giedroyc, as the pair do battle on comedy challenge show Taskmaster.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the Taskmaster format, five comedians compete in a series of strange and bizarre tasks judged by the Taskmaster himself Greg Davies, with input from his assistant and scorekeeper Alex Horne.

And here's a preview of the contestants taking part in the first proper task of the new series – rather aptly for Mel and Noel, their first challenge will involve destroying a cake.

Mel had a good look at the cake before she'd even looked at the instructions for the challenge (clearly taking a strategic approach), while Noel could barely stop laughing as he read what he had to do.

"Most beautiful destruction wins", apparently, but whose showstopping efforts will most impress Greg and Alex?

All will be revealed as Giedroyc and Fielding join Hugh Dennis, Joe Lycett and Lolly Adefope in the fourth series, due to start airing on Dave tonight (April 25) at 9pm.

Taskmaster began at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2010 and 2011, and its creator Horne previously told us it was inspired by both The Crystal Maze and Big Brother.

"I'd say the Crystal Maze [was an influence], that's a good starting point," he said. "I used to work in Big Brother in the third series, I was a logger, which was the worst of all jobs, you had to sit and watch what happens and type it into a computer.

"I'd say the original games were really good, I don't think it gets enough credit. There was one where they had to sit in cardboard boxes for as long as they could, that was amazing and comedy! Subliminally, I'd say that was an influence."

Taskmaster is also coming to the US, starring James Corden's Late Late Show bandleader Reggie Watts.
