A Hull pastry chef has opened his first business in the city centre with a focus on quality homemade pastries and breads.

Steven Lodge, 29, opened Patisserie House in Princes Dock Street on Thursday, July 4, and said he's been enjoying a steady stream of business. He is also talented in sugarcraft and has won numerous awards for unbelievable designs all sculpted from sugar.

Describing his first few days in business, Steven said: "It's been good and there's been a lot of support from friends and family. A couple of people have been in for a few days in a row now - that's good.

"Everyone has enjoyed it I think. I've not had any negatives and it's going well so far."

For several years Steven worked as a pastry chef at Winteringham Fields, Lincolnshire's only Michelin Star restaurant. But he decided to take the plunge and open his own place when he was offered to take over 17 Princes Dock Street.

"It's the next step really from being the pastry chef at a Michelin-star restaurant to then doing your own thing," Steven said. Although pastry has a reputation as being difficult to master, Steven said he enjoys it. "Once you know it it's quite straightforward," he added.

Patisserie House has freshly roasted coffee courtesy of local business Blending Room which can be served with Steven's homemade syrups. Steven also makes pastries and chocolates from scratch which are proving popular with the customers.

He says he also caters for vegans and people on a gluten-free diet and the selection will grow next week. On the menu currently are bakewell tarts, lemon meringue, chocolate and raspberry tart, blueberry muffins, lemon muffins, and homemade ciabatta bread sandwiches - options include the traditional ham and cheese and also a vegan pesto filling.

Steven's favourite thing to create is the impressive sugar sculptures that have won him numerous awards over the years. He took up the art while studying at Hull College.

In 2017, Steven represented the UK at the WorldSkills competition in Abu Dhabi. One of his award-winning creations is pictured here and he hopes to display more of his work at the patisserie in the future.
