Patrick Dempsey Shares His Intense Workout Regimen, Reveals the Food He Just Can’t Resist: 'That’s My Weakness' (Exclusive)
“The older you get, the more work you have to put in,” says the actor, who was crowned PEOPLE’s 2023 Sexiest Man Alive
Patrick Dempsey is making sure his health is a priority the older he gets.
The actor, who was crowned PEOPLE’s 2023 Sexiest Man Alive, has been determined to stay in shape and healthy over the years. But the 57-year-old admits that it’s a lot easier to do when he has his 16-year-old twin sons, Sullivan and Darby, holding him accountable.
“I have teenage boys who keep me very active and I need to stay in shape to keep up with them,” the Ferrari star tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. “So, they're on me about my diet, about am I training enough, am I working hard enough. They’re very good for me and I appreciate that and they challenge me.”
“And you just want to stay active. The older you get, the more work you have to put in just starting at the baseline you had when you were in your 20s. And psychologically it’s really good for you and I want to be active, I want to be able to move around,” he continues.
The actor adds, “You feel much better that way. So, I get up in the morning, I do my workout in the gym at the house, and then I’ll play some tennis or something with the kids or do some cycling and try to stay active.”

Dempsey — who returns to the screen with November's Thanksgiving and Ferrari in December — admits that while he enjoys cycling and mountain biking for his cardio, he hasn’t been able to commit as much as time as he’d like lately due to his busy work schedule. But as things ease up, the actor’s hoping to focus more on his fitness routine moving forward.
“I’m starting to ramp up now that my schedule is allowing me to be a little more consistent,” he says, explaining that he plans to hit the gym with weights at least 3 times a week. “I want to do that and some cardio.”
As for his eating habits and maintaining a healthy diet, the Grey's Anatomy alum says he’s “pretty good for the most part.” However, he admits his daughter, Talula, 21, makes it hard sometimes with his sweet tooth.
“I just love bread products and my daughter’s a great pastry chef and she’s always experimenting so I’m always eating that,” Dempsey says. “So, that’s my weakness — it’s bread products and sweets. I love the sweets.”
