Paul was due to appear in court over driving and drug offences the day his death was announced. He was set to enter a plea at Warrington Magistrates' Court in Cheshire after being charged with being in possession of several bags of cocaine as well as a 'quantity' of cannabis, as said in court documents.

He was also accused of driving a vehicle whilst under the influence of drugs on October 2, 2024, in Warrington. Six months before his tragic death, Paul suffered a near-death experience as he fell ill with respiratory failure which he said was due to his addiction to vaping.

Paul ended up in intensive care and was also treated for pneumonia during his stay at Whipps Cross Hospital. The doctor issued a stark warning to the star, telling Paul that he could end up on oxygen if he smoked again.

Paul developed his vaping addiction after stopping cigarettes in 2021. The soap actor and reality star revealed he was under the impression that vaping was "healthier". However, his addiction soon turned to vaping and he "got obsessed". He said: "Everywhere I went I’d have my vape with me. I’d always have one in my hand, I would even go to sleep with it, like a comfort thing."

He recalled of his hospital stay, blaming his admission on his vaping: "I was on a machine in ICU and ended up with pneumonia. My family were warned that I might not make it through the night. I'm so lucky."

Paul was given a stern warning by his doctor, who explained to him that if he ever smoked again he could end up on an oxygen tank.
