Former Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has launched a defence of Harry Kane ahead of the Champions League clash with Bayern Munich at Villa Park.

Kane has bizarrely been the target for criticism in the wake of Bayern’s 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on Saturday. He has already scored 10 goals for Munich so far this season in total, including four in their Champions League opener against Dinamo Zagreb.

But his performance in the draw with Leverkusen has been criticised in the German media as he drew a blank before being forced off with an ankle injury that has made him a doubt to face Villa on Wednesday night (8pm).

Reacting to the criticism of the England captain, Lambert told talkSPORT: “Dear, oh dear. He scores goals like they are going out of fashion.

“There aren’t too many better at scoring goals than him. I think it’s a low blow, you can’t say he’s not performing.”

In a statement on Kane’s injury, Bayern said: "Harry Kane suffered a painful blow to his ankle in Saturday's top Bundesliga match against Bayer Leverkusen 1-1.

"Examinations by FC Bayern's medical department on Sunday showed a positive development. Kane will continue to receive intensive treatment."
