Paul O’Grady Defends Battersea Dogs And Cats Home

Over the weekend Battersea Dogs & Cats Home were at the centre of a scandal as an anonymous source came forward to claim that the charity were putting down hundreds of healthy dogs each year.

The ‘insider’ alleged that the home maintained a “culture where there’s a bias in favour of putting the dogs to sleep”, with Battersea immediately hitting back in a lengthy statement that explained that they sometimes had no choice but to make the “difficult decision” to put some dogs to sleep.

Now, Paul O’Grady, who has presented ITV show ‘For The Love Of Dogs’ from their London rescue centre since 2012, has hit back at the negative claims and defended the home.

The 60-year-old TV personality said: “I don’t think there is a problem. I’m in there two days a week, I’ve seen dogs who are near death… and they bring them back to life.

“They’ve had dogs for years who can’t get homes. This is someone who has a grudge. If a dog is put to sleep, it is for a good reason.

“No way are they killing dogs. I wouldn’t work there if they did.”

Battersea added that although the amount of animals put down over the last year has increased, they take each decision “extremely seriously” and only do so if it is in the animal’s best interests.

They also detailed their 2016 plans on how to decrease the stress-levels for anxious pets at their rescue centre in a bid to make their transition into the home easier.
