Would you pay £4,000 for one of these rare Beatrix Potter coins?

Rare 50p coins featuring Beatrix Potter’s Tom Kitten character are being sold for £4,000 on eBay.

The coins were originally sold by the Royal Mint for £60, as part of a limited edition of just 30,000.

Sold as “the first and only official UK coin to feature Tom Kitten”, they are presented in a clear acrylic presentation case alongside “a booklet on the mischievous cat and his adventures”.

The coins were released as part of a series celebrating 150 years since the popular author was born.

It seems that a few failed to meet the Royal Mint’s usual standard however – and their owners are keen to make a mint of their own on the back of this.

One is listed with a buy it now price of £4,050. It’s owner has written: “This is a One-Of-A-Kind error in the minting process.

“The printed component on the coin has been rotated to the right, you can see from Tom’s ears that the colour has spilled over to the right of his ears (and also his face).

“This coin is a rarity, that collectors would have a keen interest in. The fact that it’s a silver proof coin, and it left the Royal Mint with the error, this makes this coin a unique, one of a kind production.”

A second coin is also for sale on the online auction site, with a buy it now price of £4,000.

Its owner promises: “It will have an insane value in the future because is unique! I can’t find anything similar on Google! I will consider any reasonable offers!”
