If you're looking for a relaxing way to fill a morning or afternoon, look no further than a walk around Carr Mill Dam.

When a taxing hike or long bike ride doesn't sound like an appealing day out, a peaceful walk with a pub at the end could tempt you. Carr Mill Dam, in St Helens, offers around a 3km circular walk which boasts water views, woodland and even bluebells in the spring.

It's a quiet trail, perfect for dog walks and family outings, that takes around 40 minutes to complete. However, if you decide to stop to bird watch or just take in the surroundings, you can stretch it to an hour.

Many people choose to get their steps in at Carr Mill Dam because of its beauty, but also because of The Dam Bar and Grill. With stunning views of the surroundings, nothing beats a delicious meal or cold drink at the pub after working up an appetite on the trail.

The venue, which took home the title of St Helens' Best Beer Garden in 2023, was previously called The Boathouse, before being renamed The Dam last year. As well as offering a menu that includes breakfast served until 11.30am every day, it also serves pub specials such as fish and chips, burgers, chicken wings, sandwiches and salads.

If watching the world go by with the waterside backdrop isn't entertainment enough, sometimes water sports take place on the lake and live music is played from 2pm on weekends. Some decide to start off their Car Mill Dam walk at the pub and tuck into a full English breakfast, or stacked pancakes before setting off.

However, others opt to unwind with nibbles or a three course meal at the end of their walk. One five star reviewer on Google said: "Such a lovely place we went for a walk round the dam and had a pint after the walk. Lovely views bet its gorgeous in summer. Large outside area."

Another added: "Called in here for breakfast while out for a walk with the dog. I had a small breakfast and for that I got bacon, sausage, egg, hash brown, tomatoes, beans, black pudding, mushrooms and a slice of toast for £5.95. The food was absolutely delicious, I suspect bacon and sausage were locally sourced from a butcher because the taste was amazing and not like supermarket sourced food that is plasticky. I will be going back very soon and highly recommend it."

A third said: "For an independent establishment it's brilliant the staff are always polite engaging and happy, with great menu the food is always fresh well prepared and good portions all set on the bank of the lake, and very dog friendly, it's not the first time I have been and won't be the last."
