Peaky Blinders mastermind Steven Knight has revealed that he's trying to "rehabilitate" Tommy Shelby over the course of the series.

Portrayed by Inception's Cillian Murphy, Tommy's narrative trajectory has rapidly ascended to the high echelon of politics during its current four-season run (the fifth will debut later this year), after starting off his journey in a much rougher state of mind.

Speaking at the show's fifth season premiere in Birmingham, Knight told BBC News: "The fact that Tommy is now an MP for South Birmingham means that he has to retain his contacts with the people of Birmingham.

"We all know that he has many motives, but what I'm trying to do over the long game is to rehabilitate him."

Whether or not this will see Tommy hanging up his guns and political career for good is anyone's guess, but Knight has previously confirmed that the show will "almost certainly" last seven series – giving the Peaky Blinders' main man plenty of rehabilitation time.

The creator teased back in February: "I'm about to start writing season six now and if all the wheels fall off, or it goes horribly wrong, there's probably people that will say something.

"But at this moment, it has its own logic and momentum. Right now, it feels as if the characters are just writing themselves".

Peaky Blinders will return to BBC One later this year.
