Not content with packing the cast of series 1-3 of Peaky Blinders with the likes of Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, Sam Neill and Paddy Considine, the producers have only gone and splashed out on their best cast yet for season 4.
Fans of the show have been watching the Shelby clan get up to no good on the streets of early 20th Century Birmingham since 2013. Ratings have been solid and now with the show appearing on Netflix, it has added countless international fans. It was no surprise that after a killer cliff hanger at the end of series 3, the show was renewed for not only a fourth series, but also a fifth.
It’s a confident move from the BBC and creator Steven Knight, but we’d expect nothing less from the swaggering series and its dangerous cast of shady characters. What was slightly more unexpected was that Peaky Blinders would be picking up an even bigger and starrier cast than arguably ever before in its upcoming fourth season that began filming in March.
As the cast took to the streets of Birmingham for filming, it was announced firstly that Oscar winning Adrien Brody would be joining the cast in an as yet undisclosed role. Admittedly, Brody’s career has had its ups and downs of late, but he is phenomenal actor as anyone could see from his award winning role in The Pianist as well as his appearances in films from Wes Anderson. More importantly, he’s got the look to fit right in with the world of the Peaky Blinders. Just imagine him donning those threads.
Then came word that Aidan Gillen would also be joining the show in series 4. Fresh from his appearance in the wonderful Sing Street as well as his continuing role in Game of Thrones as Littlefinger, let’s just hope his commitment to Peaky Blinders doesn’t mean he’s next for the chopping block in the notoriously bloodthirsty HBO fantasy epic. Again, Gillen looks the part and with his ability to be both slimy and strangely appealing, he’ll fit right in with the Peaky Blinders.
With Tom Hardy also confirmed to be back shooting scenes for the new series, Peaky Blinders is guaranteed to be pumped full of testosterone as the gangsters get at each other’s throats. New to the series Charlie Murphy will help balance the power back towards the strong women of Peaky Blinders, as well as the returning Charlotte Riley.
If rumours are to be believed, Samuel L. Jackson is also sniffing around for a part, so don’t rule him out of at least a cameo at some point in the future of Peaky Blinders.
