Pelosi knocks Boebert and Greene for SOTU outburst: 'They should just shut up'

During President Biden’s State of the Union address earlier this week, images of Reps. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., and Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., interrupting his speech went viral. At one point, after Boebert heckled Biden, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., appeared to say, “Shut up.”

At her weekly press conference on Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was asked about Boebert and Greene’s behavior.

“Let me just say this,” Pelosi replied. “I agree with what Sen. Lindsey Graham said: ‘Shut up.’ That’s what he said to them. I think they should just shut up.”

In the final question of the press conference, Pelosi was asked about the actions of Boebert and Greene in comparison to former Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., who shouted “You lie” at President Barack Obama during a 2009 address to Congress.

The Democratic-controlled House later voted to formally rebuke Wilson, but so far a similar action has not been proposed for the congresswomen.

Last weekend, Greene appeared in person at the America First Political Action Conference, which was organized by white nationalist Nick Fuentes.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., called her appearance at the event “appalling and wrong.”

“There’s no place in our party for any of this,” McCarthy said.

But he did not discipline Greene, who was removed from her committee assignments by House Democrats in February 2021 after McCarthy declined to punish her embrace of bizarre conspiracy theories and endorsement of violence against Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.

“McCarthy has been protecting his little KKK Caucus for years with these toothless statements and meetings,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Monday. “It’s how he covers for them."
