‘The Penguin’ Rules the Streaming Roost, Holds Off Taylor Sheridan on Streaming Top 10 | Chart

Last week, the final episode of Max/HBO’s limited series “The Penguin” topped Samba TV’s Weekly Wrap Report streaming chart for the eighth consecutive week, a run that lasted the entirety of the series.

This week, “The Penguin” proves just how massive of a streaming success story it truly is by topping the chart yet again — this time in a week in which it did not air a new episode (something that another Max/HBO series, “House of the Dragon” did this summer). Even more impressive is that “The Penguin” did this against stiff competition in the form of a series finale from one of the biggest names in TV and a box office juggernaut that was just added to streaming.

The Wrap Report provides an exclusive first look at the most watched movies and TV series from the past week across both streaming and linear television sourced from viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households, balanced to the U.S. Census.

Let’s start with the finale, which belonged to “Tulsa King” on Paramount+. The Sylvester Stallone-led series has been a steady riser on the chart since it returned to streaming this fall. Created by one of the most powerful people in TV, Taylor Sheridan, “Tulsa King” seemed like it had a real shot to upset “The Penguin” this week. Ultimately that bid fell short, but over on linear we see Sheridan’s name prevailing in the Top 10 this week.

Meanwhile, Disney+ added a heavyweight contender in the form of “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The Marvel Studios film is the second highest grossing movie at the box office this 2024, having brought in $1.3 billion around the world so far. It was no slouch on streaming either, with 1.3 million U.S. households tuning in over the first six days it was available on Disney+.

Coming in at No. 4 is a newcomer to the chart, “Cross.” The crime thriller was added to Amazon Prime Video on Nov. 14, and audiences eagerly dove into the series eight episodes.

A trio of Netflix titles follow. “Outer Banks” slides down two spots to fifth as audiences continue to watch the second half of the show’s fourth season. In sixth is “Focus,” one of those Netflix oddities that comes out of nowhere and finds a new life on streaming. The 2015 rom-com thriller didn’t get great marks from critics or viewers, despite starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie. “Hot Frosty” is next, a Hallmark-style Christmas romantic comedy that signals the fast-approaching holiday season.

“Special Ops: Lioness,” in No. 8, is the second Paramount+ series on the list, as well as the second series in which Sheridan can claim a credit.

Coming in at No. 9 this week is Season 6 of the Netflix series “Cobra Kai.” It’s followed by “Twisters,” the natural disaster flick that hit theaters this summer. It touched down on Peacock on Nov. 15.

Switching to linear, the original Taylor Sheridan hit “Yellowstone” tops the chart for Paramount. It sets up a three-way contest between “The Voice,” in second, and “Tracker,” in third. Each of those shows has traded places atop the linear chart recently, and we’ll certainly keep an eye on them as they jockey for the top position in the weeks to come.

No. 4 is “Dancing with the Stars.” Even though the show is in its 33rd season, it’s still got some swing, returning to the chart this week as it approaches the Nov. 26 season finale.

The long-running scripted shows “FBI,” “Chicago Med,” and “Chicago Fire” come in at No. 5, No. 6 and No. 7, respectively. Those are followed by “Saturday Night Live,” where Charli XCX was both host and musical guest this past week.

No. 9 is the fourth and final entry in the Sheridan TV domination plan, “Landman.” The new series premiered on Paramount network with two episodes on Nov. 17.

Finally, it wouldn’t be a linear most-watched list without “Wheel of Fortune.” The gameshow closes us out at No. 10 this week.
