From penguins to Potsdamer Platz – these are some of our favourite images shortlisted for a prestigious photography award.

The Sony World Photography Awards has revealed its open competition shortlist across 10 categories – from still life to wildlife.

Here, we’ve pulled together a selected of our favourites which have been singled out by expert judges.

From the carefully posed portraiture category to the chaotic street section – the competition is fierce.

Now in its 12th year, the Sony World Photography Awards celebrates the finest contemporary photography from the past 12 months.

More than 326,000 entries were submitted across the four competitions of the 2019 Awards – the highest ever number to date.

Winners are set to be announced on April 17, the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition is on show at Somerset House April 18 to May 6.
