Penny Dreadful won’t return for Season 4

It looks as though ‘Penny Dreadful’ is over…

According to showrunner John Logan, the recent ‘Penny Dreadful’ Season 3 finale is where the Showtime horror series ends… and apparently, it ‘had to happen’.

“We knew where it was going, and where we wanted to end it,” he said in a recent video interview. “It seemed the only place it could end.”

‘Penny Dreadful’ draws on numerous iconic 19th century characters such as Dorian Gray, Victor Frankenstein and even Count Dracula. Even the show’s name is a reference to the cheap, and incredibly popular serial fiction which became widely available across the UK in the 19th century.

Of course, the Season 3 finale of ‘Penny Dreadful’ aired just a couple of days ago… and the end scene left many viewers stunned – was this really the end?

The final episode saw Vanessa (played by Eva Green) voluntarily killed at the hands of Ethan (Josh Hartnett) – sacrificing herself to God in order to save the world. It seems like a pretty definite end to me… but the real kicker?

The episode ended with a title card which read: “The End”.

And now showrunner John Logan has confirmed that this is indeed the end for ‘Penny Dreadful’… and explained why this was always the plan.

“I realized that’s where the third season was going to head,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “It was going to head to Vanessa sacrificing herself and reuniting with God.”

“I knew well before [studio boss] David [Nevins] did,” he added, “which is sort of midway through the second season, so two years ago. I was planning out the third season.”

Of course, it’s been a bit of a roller-coaster for Vanessa throughout the series. And at the core of her struggles lies her faith – even when confronted with both Lucifer and Dracula, Vanessa has shown an immense strength of faith in the God she once thought she lost.

But in the final episode, she returns to her faith – and to God.

“Penny Dreadful is about many things, but for me it’s always been about one really simple thing, which is a woman’s journey of faith — a deeply religious woman who loses her God and then finds him again. I realized that’s where the third season was going to head. It was going to head to Vanessa sacrificing herself and reuniting with God.”

“And that had to be the apotheosis for the character, the end of the character. I really thought about it deeply, because I love these characters so much, and I care about them so much, but it seemed that’s what had to happen. Anything other than that would be, for me, an act of bad faith, and the last thing I’d ever want to do is treat Vanessa Ives or Eva Green with anything less than completely good conscience and good faith. So I had the discussion with Eva, and then finally it just became apparent. I talked to David about it, and here we are.”

Although the series failed to draw huge viewing figures, it drew a very passionate fan base… and received critical acclaim for its performances – especially from lead actress, Eva Green.

Will Showtime ever return to the world of ‘Penny Dreadful’?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but the story of Vanessa is definitely over.

‘Penny Dreadful’ starred Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, and Rory Kinnear.
