A pensioner struck by a robbery getaway car in north London has died from his injuries in hospital.

The pedestrian, 74, was taken to an east London hospital following Tuesday night’s collision, but died from his injuries in the early hours of Friday morning.

Scotland Yard said officers tried to pull over the four robbery suspects when the car drove off and crashed into the man on the pavement.

Police officers were responding to reports of a robbery in Hornsey Rise Gardens, Crouch End when they saw the suspect car in York Way, near Kings Cross train station.

The driver of the Kia refused to stop which led to a high speed chase and the car hitting the pensioner.

Police say four men got out the vehicle and fled the scene.

Three men were arrested nearby on suspicion of robbery and taking and driving away the car and they remain in custody while police continue to hunt the fourth suspect.

The victim has not yet been formally identified and his family have not yet been informed.

Scotland Yard said the Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed, and the Independent Office for Police Conduct have launched an independent investigation into the tragic incident.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “At around 5.30pm on Tuesday, officers responding to reports of a robbery in Hornsey Rise Gardens, drew alongside a suspect vehicle to stop it on York Way, junction with Caledonian Road.

“The vehicle made off at speed, colliding with a member of the public.

“Four men are believed to have decamped from the vehicle and fled the scene.

“Three men were arrested nearby on suspicion of robbery and taking and driving away and taken into custody where they remain

“Enquiries to locate the outstanding male continue.

“The pedestrian, a 74-year-old man, was taken to an east London hospital, where he sadly died in the early hours of this morning. His next of kin have not yet been informed.

“He has not yet been formally identified; a post-mortem examination will be held in due course.”

He added: “The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed and the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, who are conducting an independent investigation.”
