‘People go to his concerts to hear his music not his political views’: Nicola Sturgeon hits back Morrissey after on-stage dig

Nicola Sturgeon has hit back at Morrissey after he made a dig at her on stage in Glasgow, saying that “people go to his concerts to hear his music not his political views.”

When questioned about the singer's remarks, Sturgeon said: “I haven’t really paid much attention to it to be perfectly honest.

“Was I a Smiths fan? Not hugely. I like some of the Smiths [music]. I’ve always thought Morrissey was a huge talent but I don’t know.

“I expect people go to his concerts to listen to his music rather than to heed his political views.”

Morrissey fans reportedly “walked out” of his Glasgow show after he made a joke about Scottish Prime First Nicola Sturgeon.

The former Smiths frontman, reportedly made the remark in the middle of his set.

He supposedly asked the crowd: “Do you actually like Nicola Sturgeon?”

Fans on social media claimed that a large number of the shocked audience walked out in disgust at the Let Me Kiss You singer’s question.

One fan wrote: “Morrissey s**gs off Sturgeon and some folk leave the gig after paying £65 for a ticket, bunch of a****.”

Meanwhile another said: “Morrissey tonight @TheSSEHydro “who likes Nicola Sturgeon” mixed cheers and boos. Morrissey: “she’d put her hands in anyone’s pockets” I left.”

Another joked: “Morrissey asking "Do you actually like Nicola Sturgeon?" at a gig and someone responding "Scottish politics is none of your business" was definitely a highlight of last night.”

However, some Twitter users claimed that no one walked out and that the boos and protests were in response to Sturgeon’s name rather than Morrissey’s comment.

One wrote: “Saw Morrissey in Glasgow last night and no, there wasn't outrage/walkouts that he slagged off Nicola Sturgeon. He asked "do any of you actually like Nicola Sturgeon?" And they booed. Ie. They booed HER.”

The news comes after the 58-year-old singer-songwriter appeared to defend Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein in an interview last year.

He told a German newspaper some alleged victims of sexual harassment or assault were "just disappointed" that they hadn't been given a "great career".
