A recent survey by AO.com has revealed concerning statistics about the food storage habits of Brits, with over half found to be storing raw meat in unsafe positions within their fridges. This increases the risk of cross-contamination and potential exposure to harmful bacteria such as campylobacter and E.coli.

In response to these findings, food storage expert Sarah Heaps has issued a health warning, expressing concern that many households are not only using the wrong section of their fridge for meat storage but also failing to store meat hygienically on its own. She emphasised that raw meat should always be stored on the bottom shelf of the fridge, which is the coldest part.

Furthermore, it should be wrapped or placed in a sealed container to prevent any juices containing potentially harmful bacteria from leaking out and contaminating other food items in the fridge.

The survey results indicated that nearly a quarter of Brits store their raw meat on the middle shelf, which Heaps warned "heightens the risk of meat juices contaminating the items stored on the shelf below". 7% used the top shelf, further increasing this risk, while 12% used the drawers intended for fruit and vegetable storage.

Sarah pointed out the dangers inherent in common food storage mistakes: "It's alarming to see that so many people are unknowingly putting themselves at risk of food-borne illnesses by improperly storing raw meat in their fridges. The bottom shelf of the fridge is the only place for raw meat, as it prevents harmful bacteria from contaminating other foods. Be sure to never store it anywhere else."
