People on Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Pension Credit are set to get a bonus payment in coming weeks. The annual payment is known as the DWP Christmas bonus and will see eligible claimants receiving £10 from the government.

The qualifying benefits include Carer’s Allowance and Carer Support Payment as well as Child Disability Payment, Constant Attendance Allowance (paid under Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes) an Contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance (once the main phase of the benefit is entered after the first 13 weeks of claim) too. Incapacity Benefit at the long-term rate and Industrial Death Benefit (for widows or widowers) are also qualifying criteria.

Other eligible benefits are Mobility Supplement, State Pension (including Graduated Retirement Benefit), Severe Disablement Allowance (transitionally protected), Pension Credit - the guarantee element, Personal Independence Payment, Unemployability Supplement or Allowance (paid under Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes), Disability Living Allowance and War Disablement Pension at State Pension age.

War Widow’s Pension, W idowed Mother’s Allowance, Widowed Parent’s Allowance, Widow’s Pension, Adult Disability Payment and Armed Forces Independence Payment complete the list, alongside Attendance Allowance. AA has 1.5 million claiamnts, while 1.3 million claim Pension Credit and Carer's Allowance.

If you’re a married couple, in a civil partnership or living with your partner as if you are then you may both be entitled to separate bonus payments if you qualify individually. If your partner does not receive one of the qualifying benefits they could still get the bonus if you were both over the state pension age by the end of the qualifying week, “ordinarily resident” in the qualifying countries and your benefit entitles you to an increase because of them or you’re receiving Pension Credit.

Despite the bonus, there is controversy over the fact it hasn't risen with inflation since it was introduced in the 1970s.
