People Still Think Sally Lindsay's in Coronation Street
Sally Lindsay, who played much-loved Rovers Return barmaid Shelley for five years, had a incredible 18 million people tune in to watch her TV wedding on Coronation Street.
So it’s no surprise that shaking off the ITV soap is a tricky business. In fact, plenty of people think she never even left. “When Suranne (Jones) and I were on Corrie, you have to remember it was getting 14 million people watching each episode. So for some, I will always be Shell.
“It used to drive us mad when we were trying to establish ourselves once we left, but we’re over it now,” the 43-year-old actress told The Sunday Mirror. “It got us famous, didn’t it?”
“People think I’m still in it! It’s mad. Someone came up to me the last time I was in Manchester and said, “Oh, are you hear filming Corrie then?” I just said, “Do you watch it?” And they replied, “I never miss and episode.” I thought, you bloody do. You’ve missed 10 years’ worth of episodes!”
Since leaving The Street, Sally’s worked alongside pal Peter Kaye in Phoenix Nights, been on the Loose Women panel, voiced a character in Wallace and Gromit and is now back playing Lisa in the new series of drama Mount Pleasant. These days she lives in London rather than Manchester.
“I miss suet pudding, and chips and gravy,” she admits. “I have to make my own gravy when I go to the chippy at home, it’s a nightmare.
“Me and Suranne Jones, who is one of my best mates, went out for a roast a few weeks ago and we both said, in unison, “Can we have extra gravy?” It was like playing spot the northerners, we’re obsessed with the stuff.”
