"People stop me on the street and ask me to say my iconic phrases"- Julian Simmons set for his debut DJ gig at Custom House Square

Julian Simmons is set to headline Custom House Square for Belfast Pride with his debut DJ gig. The former UTV presenter will be taking to the decks on Saturday, July 27, from 5pm to 6.30pm.

The inspiration for his new 'Ibiza Vibes' DJ set came from his many holidays to Ibiza in the 1990s. His playlist blends retro 90s classics with modern hits, overlaid with some of Julian’s iconic one-liners from his TV days.

A statement said: "It’s Pride month in Belfast and Julian Simmons is coming out… as Belfast’s hottest new DJ! The Northern Irish media star left UTV in 2020 but still is very much working and loving the showbiz life.

"In his spare time, Julian has been playing with the decks and learning skills from fellow DJ friends, proving he can turn his hand to anything!"

Speaking to Belfast Live on when he began DJ'ing, Julian said: "The person who really set me on to that was Carolyn Stewart. I used to be on her radio show every Friday and then I started doing gigs with her, and she taught me quite a lot.

"She was confident enough to occasionally leave the DJ booth and go and talk to people down on the dance floor or go and have a cup of coffee and leave me in charge.

"That's what gave me the confidence to think 'I can do this'."

On his 'Ibiza Vibes' Belfast Pride gig at Custom House Square, Julian said: "I'm looking forward to it. It's going to be really good pounding dance music that I love. I first went to Ibiza in the early 90s and on that occasion I had a very traumatic fortnight due to problems of the heart, and the only thing that got me through it was the pounding music. And that's why I have always loved it.

"Custom House Square, it should be very good, it's a good venue and it should resonate beautifully with the music."

On life after working at UTV, he added: "I have done a bit of DJ'ing but mostly, I'm very lucky that people still want me to go host things and do shows... I'm quite busy at times which is good.

"People stop me on the street and ask me to say my iconic phrases."

'Julian's Ibiza Vibes' is a free event, with the broadcaster adding: "You can come along, boogie on down, or just listen to the music. You wont be standing there, you'll feel the want to groove, there's no two ways about it. There's going to be dancers on the stage with me... We should get a good buzz going."

Speaking on the news that Julian will be headlining the annual Belfast Pride Party in the Square, held following the Belfast Pride Parade, Kirsty Mulholland, Co-Chair of Belfast Pride, said: “We are very excited to have Julian headline what is such a key event for Belfast Pride. For over 30 years Belfast Pride has been platforming the biggest and best that Belfast and Northern Ireland have to offer, and they don’t get much bigger than our Julian."

DJ Julian will be touring clubs and festivals this year. For bookings and appearances, contact carl@eventnetworkgroup.com.
