People with blue eyes tend to drink far too much.

That’s the surprising conclusion of a new study into alcoholism and genetics by a University of Vermont reseacher - who found that people with blue eyes had a strong tendency to becomes alcoholics.

Researcher Arvis Sulovari says that the research holds out hope of finding the genetic roots of psychiatric illnesses such as alcoholism, drug dependence and depression.

Sulovari says, ‘This suggests an intriguing possibility -- that eye color can be useful in the clinic for alcohol dependence diagnosis.

Suovari’s team found that people of European backgrounds with light-coloured eyes (including green and grey) had a higher incidence of alcohol dependency than dark brown eyed-individuals.

Blue-eyed people had the strongest tendency towards alcoholism.

Sulovari’s team suggest that the genetic components that determine eye colour line up along the same chromosome as genes related to excessive alcohol use.

He says that alcohol abuse is complex, and not simply a matter of one genetic ‘switch’.

He said, ‘These are complex disorders. There are many genes, and there are many environmental triggers.
