Glasgow has an exciting new Persian supermarket after a family originally from Shiraz opened their first store close to Anniesland Cross.

Entrepreneur Mehdi Zaregol and his family have launched the new venture, which is named Yalda, on Great Western Road.

Offering a wide range of Persian and Middle Eastern delicacies, including different types of rice, sweets, pickles, herbs, and dairy, it is a vibrant new space for those living in the west end and the north of the city.

Highlighting the diversity of Glasgow’s culture, the shop is named after a centuries-old Persian tradition of marking the longest night of the year with food, family stories, and exchanging gifts.

There is also a bakery and a butchery, and they offer fruits, veg and freshly made coffee. The team, which includes Mehdi's brother and wife, have revealed they are also hoping to offer products from Asia and Africa in the near future.

Beyond food, they want to introduce Glaswegians to Persian culture, through traditional wisdom and sayings which will be featured on a board in front of the shop, as well as a selection of food tours and celebrations.

Speaking about the opening, Mehdi said: "After eight months of hard work, I am so excited to see the shop is open now. I have received a huge amount of support and positive feedback from friends and neighbours for the convenience that the shop has brought to the area.

"Freshly baked traditional Persian and Turkish breads make our customers very happy.

"Everyone says that this area needed a shop like Yalda and it gives us a good feeling of being welcomed by the neighbourhood. Yalda could not been opened without the help and support that I received from my kind friends. "
