Murderer dies by suicide after standoff with officers, police say

DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — Authorities are investigating a murder-suicide on Bunche Street in Dothan.

Dothan Police identified the victim as 60-year-old Reinetta Lewis and the suspect as her ex-husband, 67-year-old Ansel Lewis.

According to Dothan Police, Lewis was shot to death by her ex-husband in the front yard of a home in the 900 block of East Bunche Street in Dothan a little before noon. She suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead on the scene. A neighbor reported the shooting.

Lt. Scott Owens says that after officers arrived on the scene, they discovered that witnesses had seen Ansel Lewis fleeing inside the house.

After multiple attempts by crisis negotiators to contact Ansel Lewis failed, officers forced their way inside the home and found Ansel Lewis dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound sometime before 2:00 p.m.

Lt. Owens confirmed that Lewis filed a protection order against her ex-husband a day before the murder-suicide took place. Their divorce was finalized on February 24, 2024.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family during this difficult time,” said Lt. Owens.
