PETA slams Jennifer Lopez for wearing feathers during Super Bowl halftime show

Jennifer Lopez’s Versace look is once again causing a ruckus. (No, not that green dress.)

This time, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is calling out the star for the feathered cape she wore during part of her performance Sunday at Super Bowl LIV in Miami, Florida.

The upscale design house arranged the coloured feathers to form an American flag on one side and a flag of Puerto Rico, the country of Lopez’s heritage, on the other.

Lopez wore the piece as her daughter, Emme, sang a portion of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” in a moment meant to be about her cultural pride and a comment on the immigrant experience.

But PETA’s problem with the garment had nothing to do with the design or its meaning. The animal advocacy group noted that “This flag could have flown without killing birds.” They used the message to caption a split photo that showed both J.Lo performing in her designer cape and factory workers examining featherless bird carcasses.

Mariel Haenn, one of the main stylists who worked on Lopez’s look, revealed that there were 40,000 feathers involved, in all, each sewn in individually.

Lopez’s team did not immediately respond to Yahoo Entertainment’s request for comment.

However, a couple of hours after PETA slammed the cape, the team behind the official Versace Instagram account noted, “All feathers used for the flag were sourced in an ethical way.”

This is far from the first time PETA has taken issue with J.Lo’s wardrobe. The last time was in September, when her movie Hustlers was released. The organisation announced it had sent a faux-fur vest to Lopez to replace the fur coat her character wore in the film.

Over the years, Lopez has been called out for her personal wardrobe choices and for using fur in her clothing line.
