Pete Doherty has put his days of partying and drug use behind him, swapping illicit substances for cheese on toast.

The Babyshambles and Libertines frontman has been spotted recently with a fuller figure, rather than the skinny appearance he became known for during his addiction-defined years in the spotlight.

Doherty now lives in France with girlfriend Katia De Vidas, who is also a part of his band Peter Doherty and the Puta Madres.

The 42-year-old told The Sun — who published photographs of his new look — that his fondness for the French cheese Comté has helped him to kick his drug habit.

"I like Comté, Comté on toast," he said.

Doherty added: "My guilty pleasure is sleeping. For years and years, I would stay up for five or six days and then I would sleep for 24 hours, so now I love sleep."

“At the moment I’m quite clean. I stopped taking heroin and ketamine. I like experimenting, making cocktails with champagne, a bit of rum, orange juice.

"I’m coming across like a bit of an alcoholic, but I’m not. I like a nice glass of water.”

Doherty said his only regret is being 40 minutes away from the nearest McDonald's, meaning it's not easy for him to get hold of a Big Mac.

Throughout the noughties, Doherty underwent a highly publicised battle with drug addiction, including during his relationship with supermodel Kate Moss.

Doherty and Moss were regular fixtures of the tabloids during their two-year on-off relationship and the former's issues with drugs have continued to resurface.

As recently as November 2019, Doherty was handed a three-month suspended sentence after he was arrested twice in the space of a week for offences connected to intoxication.

But now, it seems Doherty is making a concerted effort to remain clean — with the help of French cheese.
