The 58-year-old actor has portrayed the Time Lord in the BBC One sci-fi drama since 2013 and series 10 will air in early 2017, with actress Pearl Mackie joining the show as new companion Bill Potts.

‘Doctor Who’ was struck a blow last year when it moved from its traditional teatime slot to a post-8pm Saturday night slot, which affected viewing figures and saw a dip in merchandise sales, but, despite this, there is still a hardcore following who would be gutted if Peter leaves.

Yet, he’s keeping fans on tenterhooks.

“I’ve been asked to stay on [for series 11]. I haven’t made my mind up about that yet, mainly because I don’t want to have to make that decision. I’m trying to avoid it!” he said.

He added it’s a difficult decision to make because he’s loved every minute of playing the titular Time Lord.

“I’m lucky enough to be in touch with other Doctors, and we all agree how extraordinary it is to be in this position. To decide to leave is a tough decision for everybody… I’m just putting it off for as long as possible.”

‘Doctor Who’ returns to BBC One on Christmas Day with festive special ‘The Return of Doctor Mysterio’ airing at 5.45pm.
