While Doctor Who's casting of the first female Doctor in the form of Jodie Whittaker has had a mostly positive reception, there have been some against the change.

While you expect it from certain corners of the internet, fans were surprised by Fifth Doctor Peter Davison's seeming suggestion that a female Doctor may no longer be a role model for boys – even Sixth Doctor Colin Baker didn't understand what his predecessor was on about.

Now Davison has decided to quit Twitter following the backlash against the comment, but not before trying to explain his thoughts on the matter.

"All this toxicity about a sci-fi show has been sobering," he tweeted, "so I'm calling it a day. @PeterDavison5 used to be fun. Now it's not. Must Dash. xx"

Before posting that final tweet, he explained: "For the record I didn't say I had doubts about Jodie. I said 'she's a terrific actress and will do a wonderful job and we need to open it up'.

"I also urged uncertain fans to be supportive about change. It was a caveat about role models in an otherwise positive answer."

Hopefully Peter Davison will one day return to Twitter and the Doctor will continue to be a role model to boys, girls and Slitheen, regardless of who is playing the role.

Peter Capaldi recently said of the new casting: "I sort of don't get the idea that there's any controversy over it, I just don't really get it.

"I just think, 'It's a new Doctor Who!' and that's really exciting. It's a new person playing Doctor Who and they'll bring their whole new thing to it and that's always exciting."

Speaking of Capaldi, he will joined for his final episode at Christmas by Mark Gatiss, David Bradley and a returning Pearl Mackie.

(OK, they are all returning but Pearl is the most exciting.)
