Peter Gabriel leads new class into Rock Hall

NEW YORK (AP) — British rocker Peter Gabriel is leading the 2014 class into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his work as a solo artist.

Gabriel already was a member of the Hall with the band Genesis. He was the first musician inducted Thursday, to be followed by Kiss, Nirvana, Hall & Oates, Linda Ronstadt, Cat Stevens and Bruce Springsteen's backup band, the E Street Band.

Gabriel recalled buying his first set of tom-toms as a child. He says people who want to be in music should surround themselves with brilliance and not be afraid to let their imaginations guide them.

Gabriel performed the songs "Digging in the Dirt" and "Washing of the Water."
