Comedian Peter Kay has revealed the decision behind doing a totally unscripted episode of Car Share.

The BAFTA-winning show is back for a final series this month, with a two-part finale that’ll air on BBC One but there’s a catch.

If you thought previous episodes were funny, prepare yourself for the final ever one which is unscripted.

Both he and co-star Sian Gibson recently spoke to the BBC about the potential risk of doing an unscripted story and spoke about how fun it actually was to do.

‘I think it’s always good to try and do something original and I couldn’t think of any other narrative comedies that have ever made a fully improvised episode,’ Kay sad.

‘As Sian and myself often ad lib when filming, we thought we’d give it a go for an entire episode.’

‘We were always very fond of ad-libbing around the script when we were filming the series, so we decided to see what would happen if we took the script away and just relied on just our chemistry alone, reacting to whatever came on the radio.’

Sian revealed that, because the episode was unplanned, it made it easier to crack each other up on set: ‘We were always laughing, and nearly all of the laughter you see in Car Share is completely genuine,’ Sian said. ‘Peter knows how to make me laugh with just a look – so he constantly makes me giggle.’

The new episodes of the show will air over the May Bank Holiday, which was actually announced via Twitter last month.

Kay put on a special charity night showcasing the new series last month for lucky fans who managed to get a ticket to the Blackpool event which raised £34,000. The comedian, 44, even made a surprise appearance to remind everyone not to spoil it… and to make a Jimmy Savile joke during his first public outing in 2018.

Catch Car Share on 7 May on BBC One.
