Scotland may end up getting its independence - but not in the way it imagined.

A petition has been started by English people to get Scotland thrown out of the UK.

Using the hashtag #throwscoltandout, the petition has been signed more than 9,000 times.

The campaign demands that MPs debate what benefits Scotland brings to the United Kingdom.

‘A lot of debate has been happening in Scotland about the benefits of the Union to them, but none has been had south of the border about whether they contribute enough to the union to want them to remain part of it.

‘What is the benefit of the Scots in the Union?’ it asks.

Scotland voted against independence in a referendum in September 2014.

Some Scottish people poked fun at the petition (@Oldfirmfacts1/Twitter)

The petition has angered some, with people complaining about a ‘Little Englander’ mentality online and bemoaning the politics of post-Brexit Britain.

Some Scottish social media users took to Twitter to disparage the petition and poke fun at themselves at the same time.

One posted a picture of under-fire Scottish football manager and claimed he was capable of getting Scotland thrown out himself.

Next month England and Scotland meet in a crucial World Cup qualifier at Wembley.
