Pets evacuated, no injuries following Alsip apartment fire

One cat died and several pets were sent for treatment when a fire broke out in the third floor of an apartment complex in Alsip Monday morning, according to Alsip Fire Department and fire Chief Tom Stycynski.

One person who lived in the unit that caught fire was sent to the hospital for a standard medical evaluation but did not have injuries, Stycynski said.

The fire began at about 8 a.m. in a bedroom and was contained to just one unit at the center of the complex on the 12500 block of Kostner Avenue. There was water damage in some of the apartments below where the fire started, displacing six families, Stycynski said Monday evening. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
